Maverick is a handsome boy with a big personality and an even bigger heart. He is incredibly people-oriented and forms strong bonds with those he trusts, rewarding them with endless affection, loyalty, and companionship. Underneath his tough exterior is a goofy, puppy-like boy who loves spending time with his favorite people.
Maverick is currently undergoing slow-kill treatment for Heartworm disease and is doing very well. His adopters will receive information about his ongoing care and should be committed to following the treatment plan.
Like many intelligent breedss, Maverick thrives when both his mind and body are kept busy. He will need plenty of daily exercise, enrichment activities, and ongoing training to help him be the best version of himself. Puzzle toys, scent work, structured walks, and training sessions will all help keep him happy and fulfilled.
Maverick can be stubborn at times and, like an oversized puppy, can become mouthy when he's overstimulated or doesn't get his way. Because of this, he is looking for an adult-only home with a confident adopter who understands working breeds and is comfortable setting clear, consistent boundaries.
Due to fear of other dogs, Maverick has developed reactivity and would do best as the only dog in the home. He has shown that he can be more comfortable around female dogs and puppies, so with appropriate management he may enjoy having canine friends outside of the home. He is currently taking anti-anxiety medication to help manage the stress of shelter life and is actively participating in training classes, where he continues to make progress.
Maverick is looking for a strong, confident adopter with previous Shepherd experience who is committed to continuing his training and helping him build confidence. In the right home, with structure, patience, and understanding, Maverick has all the potential to become an incredibly devoted and rewarding companion.
